I respect my parents but I do what I believe is right.... I dont let my parents decide what I can and cannot do. My parents dont even live together, they split up approx 15 years ago.

It depends of the relation you have with them. The stronger confidence you have, the stronger will you follow there advice. I would trust my mom's advices, but never my dad (he was and still is very distant with me and my sister). I think we should take our parents advices as advices of trusted people, but you should be able to decide by yourself.
