I think it always depends on the situation. I think Honesty is better for advice. But normally, I think mean is worse.

I think neither of the options are good. You can tell someone something about themselves that might hurt but you don't have to be mean about it. Unsincerely nice isn't good either. Its like if someone asks of their breath stinks and you say no even though it does, your only helping them embarass themselves by talking to people when they have stinky breath.

I think it best to just try to be nice and try to tell your friends the truth even if it hurts.
