Default Food Prices & Buying Local

Everyone out of their parent's home knows that food prices are on the rise. And we're told it's because of riding gas prices making food more expensive to ship.

Do you think this will bring a decline in corporate farms? Huge companies that own gianormos farms in multiple states and ship food all over?
Do you think local farms and farmers markets will get a boost since they don't have to bring their goods as far? Or is it too late for them and they can't make a comeback?

How have you changed your food buying habits?

Well here in Germany we have the Problem of the rising footprices too. i dont know anything about the foodprice situation in the US so i cant answer your questions *sry*^^

i think that the high fuel prices are here a little problem too but that is not the importent one. the problem here is that the farmes are selling the corn to the fuelconcerns, which are giving a good price for it, to make biofuel. Or they are makeing electricity out of the corn (biomass power stadions).

i think its shit to fill our cars with regenerative fuel when the people in africa have to die cus they have no food.....

i could imagine that the situation in the US is like here because Europe and the US arent soooo different^^

(sry for my bad english)

We're had that exact same debate here.

I live in the Midwest so there are a lot of farms out here. Many have switched over to corn for ethanol, it changes our climate and makes it more humid, less of other food is being grown, and the food is being used as fuel instead of going to the hungry.

A sad situation.

Well I think they should just find a way to power cars besides using gas because it is expensive and bad for the environment.

I found some stats on rising food costs:

Flour, up 37%.
Eggs, up 34.8%.
Sweet peppers, up 29.2%.
Milk, up 23.1%.
Dried beans, up 21.6%.
rice is up 10% in a month; some warehouse stores are starting to limit bulk sales because of stockpiling.
