#1 | | | Story | | Chapter 1:
Jess sat in the backseat of the car listening to Fall Out Boy on her ipod. She couldn’t believe this was happening. Driving to Canada all the way from Texas was easily the craziest idea they had ever had. This all Started when her friends, Kathy, Patrick and West, had thought it’d be fun to take off somewhere the second they turned 16. They didn’t think it would actually happen though.
Kath, West and Jess were sitting around watching American Idol when the doorbell rang. Jess ran to open it, even though it was West’s house. It was Pat. “Hey There!”she said. He took in a huge breath and said “GUESS WHAT!” He said it so loud that Kathy and West had to come see what was going on. “What Pat?” said West. “I finally got my license!” Pat exclaimed. He got his exactly 5 days after Kath. Being the last to get his, this was huge to him. They wandered back to the living room and continued watching American Idol. When a commercial came Pat was the first to talk. “Remember when we said we would go on a road trip? Well, we all have our licenses now, right?” Everyone nodded. “We should do it.” They all exchanged glances and after a while they decided they would go. They decided to go to Canada. West had always had an infatuation with Canada, and the others wanted to meet Bren, a crazy Canadian who West talked about all the time.
It was the end of April when they came up with this plan. They decided to wait until school got out, there was only 4 days left anyway. It was amazing that none of their parents or siblings got suspicious when they all left their houses with two suitcases each. “Where are we going to put all this stuff?” Pat said. They’d decided to take one car, and Pat had insisted that he shoud get to drive first. “Good question.” Said Kath. Jess just looked at the eight suitcases and small car with a confused look on her face. “We’ll have to put some on the floor in the back seat” West, who’d always been the smart one, decided. “Good plan.” Jess agreed, her look of confusion gone. Once they got all the suitcases in the all climbed in the car. They’d only been driving for maybe 2 minutes when Jess decided that she was hungry. Everyone but West agreed to stop, he wanted to get to Canada ASAP.

Haha Bee. They told me it'd be in, in time for Christmas. I guess they lied
Chapter 2:
They pulled through a McDonalds drive through. West’d given in and ordered two double cheeseburgers. They got back on the road and couldn’t agree on what to listen to. Taste in music was the one thing the four of them had never shared. Jess went for the Alternative and punk, West adored hip-hop, Pat was into metal and hard rock, and Kath loved music from the 60's through the 80's. They all ended up taking out their own headsets and listening. Pat was attempting to head-bang and drive at the same time but Kath would hit him every time he tried. Eventually he pulled over “You drive then.” Jess and West were in the back seat each in their own world of music. Kath and pat switched and they got back on the road.
They didn’t stop again for about an hour, when Jess insisted they stop at a rest area. West laughed at her muttering something about super-sizing her mountain dew at lunch. She kicked him then got out of the car and headed for the restroom. West noticed the kids play area and decided he had to play on it. Pat took out the camera and was taking pictures of him and Kathy playing when Jess came out. “LUCKY FACES” She screamed, “I wanna play.” She went and joined. Eventually Pat got them all off the play equipment and into the car, and they headed off again. This time with West driving and Jess next to him in the passenger seat leaving Pat and Kath in the back seat.
This time they talked instead of music. “I can’t believe we’re doing this.” Said Jess. “Just wati a few days until our parents realize we aren’t at each others houses for a few nights.” “Just don’t answer your cell if the caller ID is your house number. Duh.” Said Pat. “Right. That’ll work for how long? We’ll have to talk to them eventually.” Jess said worriedly. “Don’t think about that right now. It’s not important now.” Said Kath, “Wait till we’re in Canada.”
They drove through the night taking turns driving and sleeping. They made it out of Texas and well into Oklahoma by noon the next day. “No turning back now.” West said when everyone else was awake, “We’re out of Texas. Someone else’s turn to drive. I’ve been driving since 9.” Jess was next to drive. They decided to stop and eat before they started driving again. None of them had eaten much besides junk food they’d brought since their McDonald’s stop the evening before. They found a Subway and stopped there.

They started driving again, only after chasing each other a bit in the parking lot after eating. Pat was driving, thankfully he’d decided head-banging was a lost cause as long as Kathy was alert and next to him.
After they’d been driving for a bit, Kathy thought of something. “What exactly are we going to do when we get to Canada?” After a minute of thinking Jess’s face lit up, “I know! We could go to that one reaalllly big mall place!” “Only after kidnaping Bren.” Said West. “Well, of course we’ll do that silly. Let’s go to the mallllll!” Jess said. “We’ll go to the mall Jess, Calm down.” Pat said, clearly annoyed. “But Bren first!” West exclaimed. “Fine. Bren first, then the mall.” Said Jess. They thought of a couple other things to do while they were there.
They stopped for supper around 6 in a town that was rather close to the Oklahoma and Kansas. They’d drove a long ways. When they stopped they saw a rack of brochures for interesting places around the area. Pat found a brochure for the worlds largest ball of twine. They decided to check it out for laughs.
They drove across the Kansas-Oklahoma border that night. And everyone besides Jess, who was driving was woke when the car stopped suddenly. “Woah!” Pat was first to talk. “What was that for?” “It wasn’t me!” Jess replied quickly. “You’re the one who’s driving.” West pointed out. “So? It still was not me.” Jess insisted. “Look at the hood!” Kathy said. There was smoke coming from the front of the car. “Don’t panic. We’ll just call for help. A tow truck or something.” West said calmly. “How do you know so much about everything West?” Jess said. West just shrugged and pulled out his cell phone. “Wait. You don’t have a number though.” Pat pointed out. “Operator silly.” Said West. Pat just rolled his eyes at that.
“Can you give me the number to a towing service?.... No it doesn’t matter which one.... Just pick one.... 675-345-6672... That’s right?... Ok thank you.” West said into his phone. West hung up and then dialed the other number. The others were out of the car getting into another round of tag. West smiled. West explained their situation to the guy on the phone who told him they’d have someone out there in 15 minutes. West joined the others in the game and soon there was a tow truck there. The man took them to a Car shop in the closest town. The man at the Car shop told them that he would need at least overnight to fix the engine. Even West didn’t get what the man had said happened to it, but they were more worried about where they would stay. “I have a cousin twice removed who lives in Kansas.” Jess remembered. “What town is this?” It turns out they were in the same town as her relative, Hannah, so they went over to see if they could stay the night at her house.
“Jess is that you darling? I haven’t seen you in ages!” Hannah said while hugging Jess. “It’s nice to meet you Hannah” Said Pat offering his hand for her to shake. “Oh please. Call me Hanz.” She said. “What are you guys doing all the way up in Kansas anyways?” Hanz asked them. They all exchanged glances. Pat was first to talk. “Uhh... you know.... turn 16... go on road trip... we don’t really.... uh... know what we’re doing...” Jess had to supress a giggle. Pat was a terrible liar. He always had been. They all knew that. “He just means we wanted to get out for the summer. Just.. Away from where we’ve been for so long... yah know?” Jess covered for him. “Well you guys are always welcome here.” Hanz said. “Thanks Hanz.” Said Kathy with a smile.

Chapter 4:
They sat and talked to Hanz for a while, until Kathy decided that she was tired and was going to the guest room, where she and Jess were sleeping. West and Pat went to the Living room where there was the couch and the floor for them to sleep on. Hanz had claimed she had an air mattress but she had no idea where. Jess went to the Kitchen to get something to drink. Hanz followed Jess.
“So, what’s the real reason?” Hanz asked when they got to the kitchen. “Uhm... real reason? For what?” Jess said caught off guard. “The real reason you guys are up here. C’mon I was a teenager once. You just didn’t want out for a bit. There’s a reason. I’m barely out of my teens Jess, I know.” Hanz said. “Well.... if you wont tell everyone I told you....” Jess started. “I won’t. Promise.” Hanz said quickly. “Alright... well.. We’ve been friends basically our whole lives....” Jess told Hanz the whole story as to how they got here and why they had to stay with her. “That sounds so cool! Would you mind if maybe I came along?” Hanz asked. “Well... There’s no more room in the car... but if you want... Me and one of the others could ride with you..take turns driving..... and there’d be more room for our stuff.... we are a bit tight.” Jess said. “Fine by me.”Hanz said with a smile. “I’ll go pack.” Jess went and told Pat and West, who all thought Hanz was the coolest cousin ever. Then she went to the guest Room.
“What on earth is all this stuff?” Kathy said. She was looking at everything on the walls and shelves, everywhere. “Oh... Hanz is a big sports fan...” Jess said. “She’s infatuated with the Cubs and Bulls. She loves everything and anything to do with them.” “Holy Cow.” Kathy said and then she laid down on one of the beds. Noticing after she laid down that the pillowcase had the Cubs logo on it. She sighed. Jess laid down on the other bed and reached towards the lamp. “I’m so tired. It’s been a long day.” Jess said. “All we did was play tag and talk” Kathy pointed out. Jess just threw a pillow at her and shut out the light.
West and Pat were in the living room arguing over who should get to sleep on the couch when Hanz came running down the stairs looking like she’d just had a major epiphany. “The air mattress is in the Attic!” She said excitedly. “Alright. Where’s the attic door.” Pat asked. “Follow me.” Hanz said. Pat and West got up and followed her. “ Riiiiight... There.” She said. They all went into the attic. Hanz started coughing because of all the dust. They rummaged around for a while before West found it. Pat pulled it out while West held up the box that was on top of it.
“What on earth do you have in there?” West asked after setting down the box. “Oh it’s probably my Cubs figurines that didn’t fit in the guest room. “You must be a big fan. Cuz that box weighs a ton.” West said. Hanz just smiled. Pat and West went down to the living room and blew up the mattress. Hanz went back to her room and finished packing and turned out the lights. She was excited. Tomorrow, hopefully, if their car was fixed, she would be on her way to Canada. She’d always wanted to go to Canada.

The phone rang at about 9 am. No one was up yet but Hanz got to the phone first. “Whaddya want?” She said annoyed. “Uh, I’m sorry to interrupt you ma’am, but this is the number that a young girl named Jessica told me she would be staying. Is she there?” A man said on the other end. “Yeah hold on.” Hanz said with a yawn. She covered the telephone with her hand and yelled. “JESS! PHONE! GET UP!” Jess came running up to Hanz’s room and took the phone from her. “Hello” She said into the reciever. “Hello miss. My name is Tim. I work at Johns auto shop. You’re car is fixed and ready for you when you can pick it up.” Said the man. “Alright! Thanks.” Jess said suddenly awake. She hung up the phone and jumped ontop of Hanz who’d already fallen asleep again. “Wake up Sleepy face.” Jess screamed. “ We needa go get the car and get going!” “Alright, alright. Just get off me.” Jess got off Hanz’s bed and stood up. Hanz rolled over. “Just five more minutes and I’ll be up alright” Hanz said and covered her head with a pillow. “No. Now silly. We gotta go.” Jess said hitting Hanz with another pillow. “I’m going to wake everyone else. Get up.”
Jess went to the guest room and told Kath who’d been on the phone. Kathy got out of bed. They went down to the living room and had to keep themselves from laughing when they got there. Pat was on the couch cuddling a pillow and West was on the air mattress practically making out with his thumb. Jess and Kath started laughing and Pat woke up. “Huhh... wha?” He said, then he glanced at West and started laughing too. West woke up at that point. “What on earth did I miss?” He asked. Then Jess caught her breath. “You two should’ve seen yourselves.” She said and started laughing again. Kathy was practically purple from laughing so hard. West and Pat threw their pillows at them and got up.
Hanz came down and told them there was cereal in the Kitchen. They all had some and then piled into Hanz’s car and drove to the Car shop. West and Kathy hopped out of the car, Pat and Jess were going to ride with Hanz to start with, And went in to the shop.
“We’re here to get our car. It’s red and... um... a car....” Kathy said. “Yeah hold on.” The guy who was at the counter went to the garage then came back again. “We have something red back there. And I do believe it is a car.” He said and smiled. Kathy laughed. They paid and then went around to the garage and got the car. They pulled around to the street where Pat, Jess, and Hanz were waiting in the other car. West tapped the horn and they pulled out and followed him.
They’d been driving for quite a while when Kathy jumped a mile, scaring West half to death. “What on earth?” West said. “My phone. I forgot it was in my back pocket and I have it on vibrate. And it just went off. And it scared me.” She pulled out her phone and looked at the ID. It was Jess. “Hey!” she said into the phone. “Hey! We’re all dying of hunger here. Wanna stop somewhere?” Jess asked. “Sure. I’m starving. I don’t know about went though.” Kathy said turning to him. “Hey West. Are yah hungry?” She asked. “Starving.” He replied. “Yep. Let’s stop at the next exit.”

They pulled off and went to Subway to get food. When they went in there was a pretty long line. Right in front of them in line was a girl who looked like she was about the same age as them. So Jess tapped her on the shoulder. Pat just shot Jess a look that said do you ever stop talking. Jess just smiled at him and started talking to the Girl. “Hey, My name is Jess.” “Uh. Hi. I’m Cazz.” “That’s a pretty cool name.”Jess said. “Yep. Guess so.” Cazz said. “You aren’t from around here are you? I’ve never seen you in the halls at school before.” “Nope. My Friends and I are on a road trip.”She said and introduced everyone to her. “We’re on our way to Canada, from Texas.” The moment she said Canada Cazz’s face lit up. “CANADA!?” Cazz screamed. Everyone in the restaurant looked, and she mumbled sorry. “Canada is probably the coolest thing on the face of the earth.” Cazz said still excited. “I’ve always wanted to go.” Jess automatically said that she could come with them after agreeing to show them around town for a while. They were tired of driving. And just like that another person was added to the road trip.
Cazz took them to the bowling alley. And to wendy’s. Even though they’d already ate. She insisted it was a good time. Claimed that’s where she and her friends went when they got bored. Because it was the most random place in town. Then she took them to walmart. “Is there nothing that great here in this town.” West said. “Yeah. As exciting as Walmart is, we have one in Texas.” Pat Said. “You’re in the middle of fricken Nebraska, what did you expect? An amusment park? Because we don’t have one of those anywhere near here.” Cazz said. “I happen to like Walmart, thanks guys.” Said Jess. After wandering around for a while, Jess was pretty sure she’d shown everyone jsut how cool walmart is.
“We should probably start driving, make it a little ways tonight.” Said Hanz. They drove to Cazz’s house so she could pack quick then stuffed her suitcases in the trunk and took off.
They had two cars and six people, so the ride was a little squished. And West and Pat told Jess that if she was gonna invite any more people along with them that they better have a car. She just laughed. “You’ll be just fine sillys.”
They slept most the way with the exception of West and Jess who were driving. They made it just across the South Dakota border, but it was about one, and West and Jess were exhausted so they just pulled off to the side of the road and slept in the cars.
